The deep black of the enamel creates a lovely contrast against the silver metal. Framing the raised domed geometric strip are petite rope twist details that run along the edge of the bracelet, giving it a multi-tiered look. Set at even intervals along the bangle are raised, applied geometric shapes which alternate between unadorned large granulated beads and carinated stacked diamond shapes. The center bands of the diamond shapes have been etched with crosshatching for a gorgeous visual texture. This ethnic tribal bangle is meant to slip over a smaller hand. The Art Deco era is famous for being the “Gatsby” or “Roaring Twenties” era. A lot of gorgeous and timeless designs in jewelry came out of this period. During the Art Deco period jewelers often made jewelry upon custom order, this would often take weeks to months to completely craft by hand. Antique Turkish, Islamic, and Bedouin jewelry all share similar ancestral and stylistic roots, and influenced each other through trade for many, many years. This can largely be attributed to the expansion of the Ottoman Empire, which valued art and craftsmanship, and fostered the continuation of Arabic arts and calligraphy. The reign of the Ottomans in the 16th and 17th centuries introduced Turkish designs to Islamic motifs and the nomadic Bedouin culture, melding a range of styles into beautiful arabesques; repeating rhythmic patterns, which often feature geometric floral and organic designs. Damascening is the art of inlaying materials into the crevasses of engraved or etched metal, much like niello-work. The technique has a long history in Japan, where damascene was frequently used to decorate the hilts of weapons. When swords were banned in Japan in the mid-1800s, damascene craftsmen turned their skill to intricately decorated pieces of jewelry. By the 1930s, more than half of the damascene items made in Japan were being exported to other countries, mainly England and the United States. The popularity of this style of jewelry lead to a boom in production of damascene items, particularly in Russia, Spain, and many Asian countries.
