Jewelry from this period was most often crafted between 1920 and 1940. Art Deco jewelry sometimes featured white gold or platinum, geometric designs, European cut diamonds, filigree, and calibre cut stones that are specially cut to fit the design of the piece. During the Art Deco period jewelers often made jewelry upon custom order, this would usually take weeks to months to completely craft by hand. Mughal jewelry emerged in India during the Mughal dynasty, beginning in the 16th century. Jewelry was an important symbol indicating a person’s status in society. The elite wore highly ornate and massively jeweled pieces. As the Mughal empire conquered the majority of India, the Mughal style spread to many other regions, being incorporated into many Indian cultures. Pieces usually display intricate designs, massive amounts of gemstones, and elaborate enameling. Riviere is a style where individually mounted gemstones and glass stones, are attached in rows or strands, creating a continuous and elegant design. Stones are often faceted and set in open back settings, allowing light to reflect throughout the stones. Riviere means “river” in French, and refers to the flowing style of this design, much like that of a river. This style gained popularity during the Georgian era and is still very fashionable today. Rubies are one of the four precious gemstones and are prized for their pink to blood red colors. The most valued hue of ruby is called blood-red, or pigeon blood, for the bright, rich hue it exhibits. The color of a ruby comes from the element chromium. Rubies have adorned royal and religious jewelry for centuries and were especially esteemed in Asian countries like China and India, where they were thought to bring good fortune. Rubies are graded by color, clarity, cut, and carat. Rubies are often also evaluated based on their geographic origin.
