The Art Deco era is famous for being the “Gatsby” or “Roaring Twenties” era. A lot of gorgeous and timeless designs in jewelry came out of this period. Jewelry from this period was most often crafted between 1920 and 1940. Art Deco jewelry sometimes featured white gold or platinum, geometric designs, European cut diamonds, filigree, and calibre cut stones that are specifically cut to fit the design of the piece. During the Art Deco period jewelers often made jewelry upon custom order, this would often take weeks to months to completely craft by hand. Agates are a semi-precious variety of gemstones composed of chalcedony and quartz layers that vary highly in grain and coloration, and usually show multi-color bands. It comes in many different colors including white, red, black, yellow, brown, or pink. The hues and bands are dependent on environmental pressure and temperature, and the mineral contents of each stone. Each agate is unique because of these myriad factors, and even slabs cut from the same specimen will vary in coloration and design. The stone was discovered on the shore of the Greek river Achates in the 3rd Century BC, and has been used for carvings and jewelry since. Fresh looking, soft wear is noticeable only on close inspection. Silver setting has a bright patina with minor surface wear. No dents or imperfections to the shape or signs of repair. Jasper stones are gleaming with no chips or surface wear, faceting is crisp. Clasp is secure and original. Material Sterling silver, natural jasper. Made by hand or in small groups of similar styles, vintage jewelry is individualistic with its own special history. Classical Art Deco silhouette with a trio of stones – use of Jasper is less commonly found. Jasper was carefully selected for color and matching patterning and given a distinctive emerald cut. Minimal silver setting is well made and drapes delicately across your wrist when worn. Excellent condition showcases the design detail and quality of construction. There are certain pieces that fall into a distinct collectable category, sometimes referred to as classics. However, the most collectable of these classics are those that include something special (such as an extra design element) that set them apart from other similar pieces. Art Deco is one of the first truly international styles, that influenced the design of buildings, furniture, fashion and of course, jewelry. The movement was given a name from the international exposition of Arts Decoratifs et Industriels Modernes, that was held in Paris in 1925 and largely dedicated to the jewelry arts. Born out of ideas of modernism and the Industrial Age, this manifested into designs that used Cubism’s bold abstraction and rectilinear shapes and combined them with intricate patterning, bold color and symmetry. High-end jewelry design houses like Cartier and Boucheron set the trends in gold and gemstones, which were then emulated by costume jewelry companies in glass or perhaps plastics, and brought to the masses. _gsrx_vers_1292 GS 8.3.6 (1292). The Art Deco era is famous for being the “Gatsby” or “Roaring Twenties” era. A lot of gorgeous and timeless designs in jewelry came out of this period. Jewelry from this period was most often crafted between 1920 and 1940. During the Art Deco period jewelers often made jewelry upon custom order, this would often take weeks to months to completely craft by hand. Chinese export jewelry became popular during the late Victorian period and persisted until the 1960s. During this period, Chinese craftsmen were considered by far the best in the world. The rich and wealthy would custom-order a piece through their local jeweler, who would send the design off to China to be made and sent back to Europe. This lengthy process was very expensive, making Chinese export pieces highly desirable, then and now. Chinese stone cutters were considered some of the finest artisans in the world. They would spend years learning to hand-carve many different types of stones, and excelled in creating finely detailed pieces other artisans couldnt even hope to compare to. Their skill was so refined that they could even carve delicate stones like coral and jade. Chinese stone cutters were so talented that Victorian era European socialites would commission pieces from them, preferring the hefty price tag that came with such high quality work to the ready availability of Western stonework. Agate is a type of translucent microcrystalline quartz. It comes in many different colors including white, red, black, yellow, brown, or pink. Agate forms when silica from groundwater deposits into the cavities of igneous rocks. Different compositions of groundwater create different colors of agate. Agate gemstones have been used for thousands of years and are commonly found rings, pendants, necklaces, and beads. Some are even made into small sculptures! Enameling originally dates all the way back to the ancient Persians of Meenakari. The technique involves bonding powdered glass to a base, usually gold, by firing (heating and melting the glass onto the metal). The glass hardens to form a layer of pigment over the metal. Enamel is made of colored powdered glass or may include clear powdered glass that is mixed with colorful metallic pigments. It was used by the ancient Egyptians, Greeks, and Celts; and later the Chinese and Georgians. It resurged in popularity in the 20th century. It is primarily used on decorative art or jewelry, usually small in size. Besides jewelry, enamel can also be applied to glass, ceramic, stone, and various other materials. Filigree metal working is a delicate form of art has been found as early as 3,000 BC in Mesopotamia. It was perfected by the Phoenicians and Etruscan civilizations between the 6th and 3rd centuries BC. It involves stamping out a design in metal and hand bending and twirling threads, combined with tiny beads, until a final motif emerges. It is reminiscent of lace and considered one of the most difficult metal working processes. Filigree is still a very popular technique in India and Asia. Repoussé began as an ancient metalworking technique dating as far back as the 3rd century BC, involving malleable metal that was hammered onto the reverse side to create an image on the front. Examples are found all over the world; Greece, Egypt, and even the Hopewell periods in the American southeast. Reverse side hammering was also used to add detail to the front, creating intricate patterns using grooves, indentations, and channeling. The piece was then carefully polished to create a hollow, eye-catching treasure. Please take this into consideration before.
